- Bicycles and airplanes
This past week, I had an "interesting" experience with Continental
airlines at EWR.
I was flying Air Canada (who provide no packaging for bikes) and had
called a few airlines. Both United and Copntinental cliamed they could
sell me a bike box despite not travelling with them. (telephone
reservations).

ZA003 is to make the trip to Farnborough for 2 days.
Interesting enough, this is one of the test flights scheduled before
entering service for ANA. This should be a B787-8, correct?
- Re: Google buys ITAsoftware
Possibly, but it's hard to see why they would want to. Orbitz was
ITA's launch customer and still pays them a lot of money.
Also, the online agencies have abandoned most booking fees, so the
price is the same as the airline itself, and in some cases the
agencies provide useful added value like SMS alerts when the flight
- Re: Google buys ITAsoftware
The on-line travel agencies have not quite put the brick and mortar
travel agencies to death.
Could Google nearly put the online travel agencies (Expedia,
Travelocity, Orbitz etc) to death by giving people a comprehensive
search engine for flights/fares and point the people directly to the
airline web site for bookings ?
- Re: Google buys ITAsoftware
Nice; Google's a lot better at software, and a lot more likely to remain
an "unbiased agent", than existing flight search sites (which almost
universally suck big time).

700 million bucks ! Not finalised yet, but Google generally gets what
it wants.
I wonder if this will be a game changer for on-lie reservations. Googke
usualy doesn't buy something unless it has some grandiose plans t do
something "big" with the inbestmet.
If you do a search for flights on Google/ITA, will Google then charge
- Re: Assembly Problems Halt 787 Flight Tests
This is what Boeing's response was on June 24th:
EVERETT, Wash., June 24, 2010 – Boeing [NYSE:BA] recently identified a
workmanship issue with the 787’s horizontal stabilizers. Some airplanes
have issues with improperly installed shims and the torque of associated
fasteners. This finding requires inspection of all airplanes and rework
- Assembly Problems Halt 787 Flight Tests
Boeing has stopped flight testing on the 787's due to finding improperly
installed parts in the tail. "This is not a design issue or a flight test
finding. It is a workmanship issue," says Scott Fancher of Boeing at a
Friday news conference. It is also not expected to cause any new delays in
the program because "wiggle room" was built into the last delays.

So far from what I see, no. According to Flightglobal, Boeing
has amassed a whole 4 firm orders: a VIP B747-8i, a BBJ, and 2 B767s.
Nothing else reported.. yet.

Whether it is really 400 or not depends upon both the revenue and the
costs of producing the A380. I am not sure even EADS really knows what
it costs to build an A380.
What we do know is that EK isn't paying anywhere near the list price
for A380's. There are periodic notices in the Wall Street Journal for
- Some A380 update information
From an Airbus presentation done at the Singapore 2010 airshow
In service since 2.5 years since entry in service.
Singapore Airline has 10 aircraft. Largest 380 fleet, and they now have
more 380s than they have 747-400s.
25 380s in service at that time.
Airlines have said that entry into service has been very smooth for all

There is no -ER variant. This is just the normal A321, with the
sharklets made by Aviation Partners Boeing. FIN is the 'launch
customer' for this retrofit, like ANZ is the 'launch customer' for the
A320 with this option. This order did come at a price: FIN dropped

- Berlin Airshow orders
Stumbled onto this:
Emirates has placed an order for 32 (yes, thirty two) A380s. This
should keep the A380 production line going for another 4 years.
Finnair plavred order for 5 A321ER aircrafts. (since when did the 321
have an ER variant ?). This is to replace some 757s. This variant will
have "shaklet" wingtips that cust fuel consumption by 4% (or so claims
- Re: First 787 announcement: Continental plans Houston-Auckland nonstop.
[link] (the great circle map site from karl swartz) has
a "special" about this flight. It appears that ETPOS 180 would require a
substantial detour. With 240minutes ETPOS, it would then make a nearly
direct flight to AKL with only 17nm deviation.
How quickly the 787 will be able to get 240-ETOPS certification is the
